Our History
STUDENTS LIVING A MISSION (SLAM) began in 2001. SLAM was started by a group of young people who believed that God had called them to lead young people on MISSION; to help the poor and oppressed around the world.
The first few years, SLAM operated from their home apartment as the staff gave of their resources, along with a few generous people, to develop the work of the ministry. Despite the lack of adequate funding or facilities, students were drawn into participation by the Spirit of God, through acts of service, in response to quality Bible teaching.
In the summer of 2001, SLAM hosted it’s first Bible Service Camp to Daytona Beach, Florida. The following winter was the first of SLAM’s nearly 100 international mission trips, which took place in Ensenada, Mexico. God opened more doors for ministry in 2002 – the Appalachian regions of Kentucky, Hispanic communities in Memphis and in Kenya, East Africa.
In 2003, SLAM expanded its ministry to Hispanic community’s in Tennessee and to AIDS Hospice in Jamaica. From 2004-2006 God continued to open up doors for SLAM to serve in areas such as Nashville, Guatemala, England, the Philippines, and Uganda. In each of these locations, God has provided local contacts for SLAM to partner with in advancing the gospel.
Whether ministering to Americans in the inner city, or Jamaicans in an AIDS Hospice, the organization has committed itself to helping the underprivileged in the world. SLAM believes in Jesus’ words, “what you do to the least of these, you do to me.”
Over the last eight years, SLAM has led thousands of students on mission to 11 different countries and 6 U.S. major cities. SLAM is committed to facilitating opportunities for young people to serve the poor and underprivileged in a very meaningful manner, the same way they began.
