Serving on Day of Celebration
By Matthew Parker
The service plunge last Saturday (October 11th, 2008) was held at Grace M. Eaton childcare center. Grace M. Eaton is a daycare that exists to provide affordable day care service for working parents who are in need of help. While regular daycare centers provide more flexibility and supervision for busy parents, Grace M. Eaton has a different purpose. The parents who bring their children here are without option and need a community of people to help them with their children. I heard one woman testify about this community on
stage last Saturday. She proclaimed her love for the daycare and explained that the volunteers and staff at Grace M. Eaton were mainly responsible for potty training her daughter. In a disconnected business format, this kind of comment could make her out to be a bad parent, but Grace M. Eaton is not disconnected. The women I have seen working there are deeply concerned for the children. They understand the pain and struggles these kids are experiencing. They are patient and become the friends and family the children need.
Youth from Christ United Methodist Church of Franklin, TN were able to join the Grace M. Eaton community last Saturday for their 82nd birthday block party. Social care organizations lined the street with bags of information and stories from their years of experience with helping people. Their pamphlets informed parents about hygiene, discipline and existing opportunities to aide their parenting experience. Christ UMC’s youth aided in the set up and tear down of tents and tables used by these social care organizations. They also helped with parking lot organization, kid safety in the moon walk, picking up trash, and making conversation with visitors. The Grace M. Eaton staff was busy with the program involving church choirs and dance teams from around Nashville. Read more

After 5 days of ministry in the mountains of San Juan Tecuaco, today the Guatemala team is headed down the mountain into the city. The hardest part of the team’s trip was saying goodbye to all of their new Guatemalan friends. They will spend the next day in Guatemala City debriefing. A lot has been learned through times of playing soccer, personal conversations, times in the word of God, prayer, meeting practical needs, and observing the Guatemalan culture. Pray as they process through their past week and prepare to depart for home.
They will be flying out of Guatemala City Saturday at 12:52pm. Their flight is on time.
Please continue to pray for the team’s last day in Guatemala and a safe travel back to the U.S.

The Guatemala team is doing great! They are working hard on completing their construction project. Today was exciting for the girls on the team as they learned a Guatemalan dance from some of the local teens! Each afternoon is concluded with spending time with youth in the area which usually consists of soccer games.
Please continue to pray for the team as their week is nearing its end!
