Teens Serving the Elderly in Nashville
The past two weeks SLAM has taken youth groups to minister at Trevecca Towers. Trevecca Towers are high rise apartment complexes that house the poor, disabled, and dependent elderly.
On Wednesday, September 3rd, Nashville First Church of the Nazarene brought 70 youth to invade the high rise apartments with the love of Christ. During their time of ministry the group was able to assist in cleaning and building relationships at 15 different apartments. While listening to stories of passed away husbands the students were reminded of our responsibility to care for the widow and orphan.
On Wednesday, September 10th Amy-Jo Girardier brought her group of twelve 12th grade girls from Brentwood Baptist to serve at the Towers. The students cleaned, did laundry, and received advice from the elderly on how to live in this world. The young girls from Brentwood were impacted as they heard the stories and saw the tears of people that have been forgotten by our society.
Thank you to all that have served with us the past few weeks. Because of your love and generosity with your time we have been able to bring life and hope to an often hopeless people.

A Shining Light in Nashville (9/1/2008)
What does the normal summer look like for a typical teenager in the U.S.? Often teenagers spend their summer months lounging at home, hanging out with friends, going to a camp, or watching hours of TV. This summer, though, a couple hundred students did more than just ‘hang out’.
SLAM is a ministry that mobilizes students between the ages of 12-25 to live a mission in imitation of Jesus Christ by serving the poor and underprivileged through community service. This summer, SLAM mobilized a total of 251 students to serve the poor and underprivileged within the community of Nashville, TN. These students came from 11 different states, and from various denominational backgrounds, to serve the community for a total of 3,634 hours. Read more

“This week God has opened my eyes to the state of my own heart. I was able to see the person I was, the person I thought I was, and the person God wants me to be by showing me the passion, faith and love of the people of Juarez, Mexico. Serving the people of Juarez changed the way I love. I realized how shallow and self-centered my faith had been and in this week God moved me to love and serve with no hesitation and purity of heart. God is so amazing.”

“I thought you should know that this weekend Literally changed my life. God spoke into me his purpose for my life and I think, and really feel in my heart that He has called me to walk His path of righteousness and do only His will for my life. I can honestly say that Jesus is the Lord of my life!”

“Before Dustin came on this trip, he told me that he thought he really needed it. I figured he just needed to get away from his little brothers and sister, but now I know that God wanted to reach him in a way he couldn’t get at home. I don’t know what all was said to him, but I understand that your teaching and example touched him. He told me he gave his life over to the Lord this week. The change in him is immediate and wonderful. I see a peace and tranquility like never before. When he got home Friday night he immediately began to get rid of some questionable items in his room (music CDs and scary movies, etc.) If you knew Dustin, you would know what a remarkable act this is.”

“Last week God broke me and opened my eyes to what he wants me to do, not what I want to do. I thank you for everything that my friends and I were taught. I have seen God in my life and theirs. As I said earlier, me and my friends are not on a ‘camp high,’ we are NU!”
